Tarot Workshop

Magic lies within the seventy eight tarot cards that make up a deck, the magic to unlock your own secrets.  A good reader doesn’t tell you things you don’t know, he or she shows you the answers you’ve had within you all along.  If you have always been fascinated with the art of reading cards but aren’t quite sure where to begin, this workshop is for you.  If you have a deck or two but feel you could use some direction and focus in your practice, this workshop is for you.  If you would like to deepen your understanding of this tool for introspection, this workshop is for you.

Any study of tarot will spend some time looking at the meanings of each of the cards, but in order to be an effective reader, you must go beyond just memorizing the right definition of the cards and learn to work the energy that is exchanged when you read for yourself or others.

I will address grounding, focusing on the questions, setting intention, card layouts and more.  There will be daily card draws and members of the group will be welcome to share their daily draws as well.  Members will be encouraged to practice reading for one another if they like, and to post their own readings for input and discussion.  Participation is on your own time and at your own discretion.  Lurking is allowed.

Class will run for one month. The start of class has been postponed so there is still time to join us!  Cost is $25 and will include at least one personal one card reading for each member.  Please contact me with questions or to rsvp for the workshop.

Princess of Wands is who you become after you’ve faced down your demons.  She is the thrill of victory, the tiger’s eye that continues to drive you, your heart of passion beating strong and loud.

Take heart.  Your battles may not be won yet, but while there is breath, they aren’t lost either.

My wish for your New Year is the Knight of Swords.  May you look forward with bright, clear sight.  May you be able to cut through the confusion, red tape, inertia and painful ties to the past.  May you know your own mind with new clarity and speak with that same clarity.

The day after Christmas card.  Whether you celebrate or not, there is a sort of lull today.  Maybe you are still spending time with family.  Maybe you’re back in your usual routine.  Thoughts begin to turn to the next phase of life.  Post holiday life.

The card is The Six of Swords from The Golden Tarot by Kat Black.  The description speaks of leaving behind the past.  It’s time to resume the journey of your life.  No more Christmas cakes or shiny lights or boxes to wrap.  No one hundred things to do to distract yourself.  Just get in the boat and go.  You have what you need.  Get on with it.

Gemini

My roommate’s youngest son is a four year old Gemini and is quite the charmer.  He can turn on some real sweetness courtesy of his Cancer moon and ascendant, but that trickster side is always in action.

This morning I noted with surprise that he is now perfectly capable of operating the television remote to switch between episodes of his favorite show, Power Rangers.  He shrugged and said “Yeah, I can do it.”  ”I thought you needed help with that.” I said.  ”Nope, I like people to do it for me sometimes.  Sometimes I lie.”

Rarely malicious, Geminis often little attachment to the unvarnished truth.   Do you have any tricksters in your world?

A Tale of Two Scorpios

My daughter has fallen for a boy who lives in England.  She’s there visiting him now and his parents, both Scorpio sun signs, have taken her in and treated her like family.  Now if you’ve never been befriended by a Scorpio, you may not know the depth of their loyalty or just what it means to earn their trust in the first place. I have Scorpio moon and ascendant and relate more personally to that sign than to my Gemini sun.

Scorpio lives a little deeper beneath the surface than most of the world.  We do not take things at face value.  Every motive is questioned, every gesture examined for sincerity.  The good ones (of course there are good and bad of every sign) will never break their word, never betray, never deceive.  Scorpios sometimes are accused of being too intense, too emotional, that is if they are they sort to let their emotions show at all, because they can be very tight lipped about, well everything.  Once you’re in, you’re in and God help anyone who hurts someone a Scorpio loves, so my daughter is a very lucky girl and with her own Scorpio influences, she knows it.

Now you know if you’ve been reading here at all that the placement of the sun at your birth only tells a bit of the story, and so this pair will have some things in common courtesy of their Scorpios suns, but they are two distinct individuals.  The chart images look like a mirror of one another, a perfectly complimentary set.

Her Scorpio sun and other planets fall along the descendant, the line marking the beginning of the house of other.  She puts everyone else before herself, loves to serve and is maybe a little baffled that others don’t think the same way though you won’t hear her complain.  Steadfast, Venus ruled Taurus falls at the beginning of her chart, the ascendant.  Taurus is the quintessential earth mother and while she is so much more than that, this is the side of her that greets you upon first meeting.

He is all first house, house of self.  Self directed, self sufficient, self motivated and maybe occasionally a bit self absorbed.  But only a little or only on occasion because this first house person has Libra ascendant and Libra is all about keeping the balance.  Scorpio’s no holds barred intensity is tempered by the grace and charm of a Libra exterior.

And so we see a theme develop with these two.  Grace and charm coupled with dependability and the capacity to sustain.  To sustain one another and anyone they care for.  Both are also dreamers.  You have to be to overcome some of the challenges they’ve faced and keep a positive outlook intact.

Saturn is the planet of hard work, facing fears, overcoming obstacles.  It is in the sign of Scorpio in the sky right now and no doubt calling on these two Scorpios to face some challenges, to keep pushing through and to carry on despite times not being the easiest.  They will persevere, as they always have and these challenges will not be the worst for there is support in the sky as well.

This is the tip of the story.  Scorpios would never forgive me for telling their secrets here on my blog.  Consider this the gift tag and the private readings to follow, the real gift.

Blue Moon

Follow the moon’s movement through the heavens to learn astrology.  This has always been my first advice to people interested in deepening their understanding of astrology.  It is effective because we feel the moon.  Studying the phases of the moon and the moon in each sign gives you an opportunity to feel your way through the zodiac’s 12 signs every 28 days.

Today’s card, The Emperor.  The Emperor runs the show.  He is Ruler, Father, Husband.  He is here today to remind us all that we each control our own destiny.  He says, marshal the forces within you.  Win your wars, take care of your creations and marry nothing short of your equal.  There is a lot that is wrong with the world right now.  Plenty of loss, lack and fear.  Despite this, you are powerful.  Use that power.

Pink Poodles

One of the things I was once sort of famous for was my habit of dying my standard poodle pink.  I used harmless food coloring in the process of her regular bath.  It was great fun and she loved the attention.

I first dyed my dog Roxie the day the levies were failing in New Orleans after Katrina.  I needed to get away from the news and what I discovered was there is magic in shaking up people’s perception of reality.  Walking around in the world with a big pink dog gets attention.  It makes people stop what they are doing and ask questions, interact.  It breaks them out of their rut, if only for a moment.

My friend wasn’t just wishing me fun or silliness.  She knows those ridiculous colored dogs are part of my life purpose.  I am here on the planet to make you think, to question mundane reality, to shake things up a little.

What is your life purpose and what do you wish for to help you along that path in 2013?

Back on Track?

I said to a friend not long ago that I hoped I could get back on track soon.  She said she didn’t think I had been off track.  I think she’s right.  Life is a journey.  For me, life is a river that sometimes goes underground.  It seems on the surface that nothing is happening but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

In a little over a month, Jupiter will turn direct.  When planets are retrograde, their energy seems blunted, or even absent.  Everyone talks about Mercury retrograde, when communication and travel just don’t seem to go well.  Jupiter is expansion, good fortune, luck.  With Jupiter in my natal chart conjunct my natal Mercury, it’s retrograde affects my ability to communicate as much or perhaps more than Mercury’s retrogrades do.

When Jupiter turns direct, everything in the sky will be direct for a while.  No retrogrades until Saturn’s retrograde starting the middle of February.  As I see it, the New Year may have a slightly slow start, but be prepared to fly.  Do the work now to be ready to roll.  Uranus, planet ruling surprises, has just recently turned direct, so you may expect the unexpected.  You may not have to wait til the end of January to see big shifts.  But don’t beat yourself up if everything takes a little while to fall into place.

Hi there, I recently bought the tarot nova. Well I bought tarot the complete kit, I'm not sure if they are the same. I'm a beginner, and I'm having trouble interpreting the cards or what they are trying to say. I would try doing readings for myself and the meanings of the card that are in the little book just doesn't seem to fit what I'm asking. I just wanted to know how you used them or how you interpreted the cards.

There are many ways to interpret each card.  The book that comes with the deck should only be a starting point.  It is more important to go with your first impression than with what each card is supposed to mean, but first you should develop a good basic understanding of the traditional meanings.  When you know what the cards are supposed to mean, then you can interpret them with your own flare.  Take your time and learn the system.  It is not a skill that develops overnight.  The Tarot Nova is a great beginners deck, but you need to do your homework.  Read everything you can about tarot, look at other decks even if it’s just online.  And don’t put too much stock into readings you do for yourself.  Tarot is a useful tool for meditation but not ideal for predicting things for yourself.

Saturn in the Natal Chart

I have Saturn in my fourth house natally.  I have a love/hate relationship with the idea of home.  Fourth house, you may know, is associated with home and family, our roots and our heart.  It anchors us to the past, feeds us and provides a soft place to land.  Saturn there makes the landing a little rougher sometimes.  To further complicate things, my natal Saturn in the fourth house is in the sign of Pisces.  Pisces flavored things are difficult to pin down.  They defy easy definition.

Adding to the complicated mix, Saturn is a cornerstone, not just by it’s nature but by it’s placement in my chart.  It ties into all of the best and worst aspects of my natal chart.  Discipline, structure, work ethic, responsibility… all must be balanced carefully on the knife’s edge.  Too much Saturn and I am rigid, inflexible, stubborn.  And breakable, like a bone.

Why is my fourth house Saturn on my mind?  Because I’ve recently moved and while i am highly adaptable, I need a little corner of the world to be my sanctuary.  With Saturn in my fourth house in faith centered Pisces, my home is my temple and my temple has been in ruins.

What does your fourth house tell you about the concept of home?  Contact me privately if you would like to take a look at your chart.  Together we can untangle the inner conflicts that prevent you from accomplishing your goals.

How about a card?  We are entering Virgo season, with the sun moving into Virgo and leaving behind the flash and sparkle of Leo in favor of grocery lists and taking care of the little details.  You know the ones?  They don’t seem very important until you forget them.  Make your plans, check them twice and instead of being overwhelmed by them, start at one corner and just start moving the mountain, one little bit at a time.
